Braised kale is a great place to startWhen I first decided to try kale, I bought a frozen bag at the grocery store and boiled it. Yuck! I decided I didn't like kale and didn't try it again for a very long time! I learned a lot about cooking in the years that followed and I came across a recipe for braised kale. It had onions, garlic and broth with a splash of vinegar. I decided to try it again. To my delight, I really enjoyed it, as did my husband. I have cooked that recipe for other non-kale eaters who have gobbled it down and licked their lips as well. |
It is not the kale, it is the cook
I have come to the realization that many times when we don't like a vegetable, it might be the way it is prepared. Sulfur vegetables can give off a strong odor especially when overcooked. I thought I would never like Brussels sprouts until I steamed them quickly until just bright green and drizzled them with butter. Now I love them. So, if you think that you don't like certain vegetables, look up some recipes on-line--especially those that are rated well. Try a vegetable prepared 3 different ways before you write it off. And then even if you do write it off--give it a try again in the future to see if your palate isn't now ready to accept the gift that it may be holding for you. Vegetables are the one food group that there is a consensus on that we all need in greater quantities.
