Spring has finally arrived in all of its glory! My daffodils, hyacinths and tulips are blooming and it is so fun to see where they come up each year. We have some squirrels who seem to enjoy relocating some of the bulbs which always gives us a surprise each spring. The crocus actually do look nice blooming in the lawn. |
Eastern medicine is based on organ meridians which are energy lines that circulate life-force or Qi throughout the body. Each season has an organ meridian that is associated with it. The organ meridian that takes the lead in spring is the liver/gallbladder meridian. Green is the color of spring and it is greens and herbs that support the liver. Think dandelions, mustard greens, spinach and baby greens.
If you have liver congestion which is common given our chemicalized lifestyle, this rising energy moves it upwards and you might find that you get a headache, your bones or neck may hurt or you may have respiratory or sinus congestion. Before I began regularly supporting my liver health, I got a head cold like clockwork each spring and fall--which are the times of cleansing. Now it is more rare, but I am still cleansing just like you are at this time of year and have learned that if I want to stay in healthy balance it's important that I support my body's natural cycles. I am sharing that insight with you.
- Eliminate fried foods and unhealthy fats, processed foods, refined carbohydrates and sugars.
- It's best to not eat dairy in spring as it is too mucous forming.
- Include more fresh vegetables--especially those that grow naturally in spring like dandelion greens, mustard greens, spinach, sprouts, mushrooms, beets, etc.
- Include more fresh fruits such as organic strawberries, green apples and blueberries.
- Drink plenty of purified water--6-8 glasses per day--while reducing alcohol and unnecessary drug intake.
- Get outside in nature and take walks, go bike riding, garden and enjoy yourself. Breath in fresh outdoor air.
