What is the Easiest Way to Save on Your Next Food Bill?
Clean out your freezer. If your freezer is anything like mine, it could probably use it. About this time of year, I look in my freezer and realize there is too much in there, and I am not really sure what it is without sorting through it. Spring is rapidly approaching and I need to get my winter foods out to shift gears for spring and also provide space for this year's harvest. So, time to clean out the freezer.
How to Quickly Clean Out Your Freezer (Hint: Use a Cooler)
Get yourself a large cooler or two. Place them in the front of the freezer and start taking things out and placing them in the cooler. Throw out anything that you no longer recognize as edible. Wipe out the freezer. Either take a mental note of the inventory that you need to use up now or write it down. Put the food back into the freezer in groupings. For example, I put all of the meat on the bottom left, the fruits in the middle and the vegetables on the right. I put the breads, frozen homemade meals and miscellaneous on the top shelf.
What Meals You Can Create Using Only Foods You Already Have?
Now the fun part. Time to get creative. Think of meals that you can put together to eat through the food that needs to be eaten. Here are some examples:

I also have been working through my frozen pumpkin from the 17 pound pumpkin that I roasted in the fall. I have been making Paleo Pumpkin Waffles. I found lemon basil from last year that I baked into GF bread. I still have a couple of roasts to eat quickly before it gets warm. I am also making beef vegetable soup from beef shank and lots of frozen veggies that I discovered.
Get That Cooler Out and Just Do It!
It took me a little over an hour to do--and I just did it! It really didn't take that long. When was the last time you cleaned out your freezer? Does it need to be cleaned out? What meals can you prepare from foods you already have? Before you procrastinate-- pencil it in on your calendar or just do it--like I did! If you really need to clean out your freezer--you will feel lighter once it is done. I now feel happy when I look in my freezer!
Freezer Check: What meals can you make for which you already have the ingredients? The older the ingredients, the better--as long as they are still edible.
Lots of love,
Karen
