What is it that you would like to accomplish but you have been putting off? Do you procrastinate based on not having enough time, enough money or the expertise? Maybe you have declared that you are too old or that you have done it this way your whole life, why change now? Or you choose to escape by watching TV or spending too much time on the Internet. These are all the excuses that we make to ourselves to avoid what we know we really need to do, but aren't doing. How does this play out in your life? What is the underlying reason?
The underlying reason for this procrastination is fear. Fear of change. Fear that you will fail. Fear that it won't work out and you will be disappointed. Fear that someone else will judge you for your actions. Fear that you will succeed and have to work harder. Fear that you will uncover something that you don't want to confront. The list goes on. If you let your fear stop you, you may never attain your desires. Many times what you are seeking is on the other side of the self created obstacle that you either consciously or subconsciously fear to address.
Identify what you want the outcome to be
Chances are you know what is nagging at your consciousness. Are you feeling stressed, tired, uncertain about something? Is there a issue with your environment--maybe your home, work, vehicle, a relationship? No matter what your situation is, the first step is to identify the issue and bring it to the forefront of your mind and decide what you want the outcome of this issue to be. Otherwise your inaction will slowly erode your mental energy and add to your stress level.
Example: Addressing the musty smell in our home
My husband and I have been dealing with a musty smell in our home and small fixes were not resolving it. We live in a slab home and our plumbing is underneath concrete, so there were a lot of unknowns. Some of the contractors we brought in were uncomfortable quoting on a job where they felt the scope was uncertain. Also, they felt the potential for causing more damage by using a jack hammer was too great. We persevered and fixed the problem--we did use a jack hammer and the house didn't fall down, but we were really nervous about doing the project and my husband ended up using the jack hammer himself. Although we ended up gutting the entire master bathroom, we now have an amazingly beautiful bathroom in its place. We are moving on with renovations to our adjacent master bedroom--ripping out walls. We used to be afraid to rip out walls--it seemed like it could get expensive and we didn't know what we would find in this old house. Now we know how to do it--the fears have been calmed. It requires work, but we now we have the knowledge and confidence to put it back together again ourselves.
Commit to taking action
Even if you don't know exactly how to proceed--make a commitment to yourself to move forward. Prioritize it. Schedule it. There are a lot of people that have issues with their health that wait to address them. "But my doctor told me not to worry about it..." However, if your inner warning signal keeps going off, should you turn off the warning signal? Or should you find a path that works for you?
Be careful not to give your power away
Although, doctors and other health care providers are wonderful assets to receive input from, they are not responsible for your health--you are. They cannot give you a pill that will make up for your poor diet or lack of exercise, but in good faith I believe they try. This is why a new health care approach which includes health coaches, nutritionists and functional medical doctors is gaining ground. This newer paradigm of true health care puts the power and responsibility for your primary self care back into your own hands, where it belongs.
Rely on your own inner guidance system
Doctors will always be available for acute care needs, but the majority of us can live more balanced lives by changing our priorities to support our individual needs, rather than forcing our body to adapt to inappropriate foods and unsupportive lifestyles. To do this you need to get reacquainted with and honor your own inner guidance system. The good news is that you have always had access to this amazing tool within you--you were equipped with it when you came into this world. And our planet is equipped with life supportive natural environments and foods that sustain us. However, if you are like most people, the signals from your inner guidance system have been discounted so often that they have faded into the background. You can get this tool back on line when you begin to trust your hunches and intuition.
Don't allow fear or doubt to stop you from attaining the results you desire
Consider that if you choose not to actively participate in attaining your desires, change will still go on without you. Wouldn't you rather want a say in the direction that you are headed? Likewise, if you redirect the energy you use to talk yourself out of taking action, you can turn "I can't" into "I can." You have little to lose, and potentially a lot to gain.
Once you commit to taking action and begin relying on your own hunches, you will find that you have a pretty good idea of what it is you need to do. It may be eating healthier, reducing your stress, even getting support. If it pertains to your health, although you may seek the guidance of a medical professional, chances are you also need to look at your lifestyle and get those areas of your life that are not serving you into balance. This is why I became a health coach.
There seems to be a gap in our health care model--well, more like a chasm. We go to the doctor and ask the doctor to fix us and we really don't want to put the effort in to fix ourselves. We just want a pill to make all go away. This is the model we have been taught. This model started about 100 years ago when infectious disease was the most common cause of illness and antibiotics became the silver bullet. Times have changed and now stress, sugar, poor nutrition, heavy metals and other toxins and lack of exercise, etc. are the leading cause of illness. We need a different paradigm to address it. The shift has begun, and the best thing you can do for yourself and your family is to do the best job you can to create health and wellness though good clean living. The power is in your own hands!
Create a strong foundation on which to build your life
If you are like most people, your life has gotten so busyI In general, we keep adding things in and many of us have not taken anything out--or have taken out the very things that result in weakening the foundation of life--healthy nourishment and nurturing of our bodies, mind and Spirit. It is the foundation which, if it is not built strong, will then weaken your feeling of safety, which contributes to stress and eventually undermines your goal of self actualization. The focus of my health coaching program is to create a strong foundation on which to build a healthy, balanced life where you feel at home in your body.
