If you live in the north, summer is one of the best times of the year to get outside and be active. Notice that I didn't say "exercise". Exercise came about because people stopped being active in their lives. We spend way too much time sitting and not enough time using our wonderful bodies the way they were designed to be used.

Did you know that each hour of sitting that you do per day increases your chance of heart disease by 14%?

At work it is recommended that you get up at least every hour and take some sort of walk. But after work, rather than adding to your chair time--this is the time of year to get outside and do something fun. And if you don't have a regular sport that you participate in--I may have just the thing for you...
The Fun New Sport the Whole Family Can Enjoy...
It is a combination of Badminton, Racquetball and Tennis and it is called Speedminton. It was developed in Germany and has become quite a competitive sport. It is played with a racquet that looks like a racquetball racquet. But rather than a shuttlecock, it uses a speeder--which is more highly engineered. It is heavier and there are different speeders depending on your skill level and the distance you are from your opponent--which is based on the size of your playing field. This is a game for the entire family. The Fun Speeder can be used in the backyard in a similar way as badminton--but with a bit more speed. But this is no wimpy game--for those who want a competitive sport, the match speeder can be played at speeds up to 180 mph in an area the size of a tennis court.

After reading reviews on Amazon, I bought a Speedminton Set for my husband, Rich, for his birthday. He plays tennis so I bought him the premium Speedminton S400 set that has carbon fiber racquets which are super light and very well made. They are all that I had hoped for--lightweight, comfortable in the grip and strung super tight. The speeder really takes off at a fairly light swing. And another fun thing is that you can put a small glow stick in the Night Speeder and play Blackminton (in the dark)!

A Terrific Outdoor Sport Played in the Dark??
I actually found Speedminton on-line while searching for something else. Rich and I had recently started playing badminton in the evenings after dinner. The problem was that it would start getting dark about the time that we started to play. I figured that someone must have invented a glow in the dark shuttlecock--so I went searching for one on Amazon. I found something even better: LED Shuttlecocks. I know that Speedminton can be played in the dark using a disposable glowstick, but I would rather play a sport that is a bit slower moving at night. So, I bought some LED Shuttlecocks, too.

They have lights inside of them! How fun is that?!? So, when we play during the day, we are practicing Speedminton, but at night--we wait for it to get dark and we are outside hitting our Red LED shuttlecock that looks like an incoming missile. It gives a sort of Roman Candle effect with it arcing back and forth. And it is quite a challenge at night because you can't see your racquet. In fact, you can't see anything except for the lighted shuttlecock. I am hoping I don't end up in my rose bushes some night!

Here is a short video clip that we made playing at night => Badminton at Night Video Clip. It really is a lot of fun. Hopefully we won't wake the neighbors!
How do you include healthy movement in your life? What can you do to take it up a notch? Do you have a sport that you would like to learn? Speedminton or Badminton at night is serious fun. How about giving it a try? Have a great week!
